- SIGNED 1935 ALLEN PALMER PAINTING
SIGNED 1935 ALLEN PALMER PAINTING - FARMERS & HOUSEAllen Ingles Palmer (American, 1910-1950). Oil on board, 1935. Signed and dated by the artist in slate blue pigment at the lower right. A wonderful painting by American artist Allen Ingles Palmer, depicting several men and their horses tending to the land surrounding a lovely home as two children sit atop the massive hay bales. Interestingly, the house somewhat resembles Woods End, Palmer's former home in southwest Roanoke County, Virginia which was torn down in 2015 despite pleas by preservationists and efforts to save the historical house from the wrecking ball. In addition to being a successful artist, Palmer was a pilot, and sadly, his life came to an untimely end when he died in a crash on his way to an art show in September of 1950. A wonderful painting by this important Virginia artist who only lived to the age of 40. Size: 16" L x 19.875" W (40.6 cm x 50.5 cm)
Allen Palmer grew up in Roanoke, Virginia, studied at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art, and had a successful career as a commercial artist, illustrator, and watercolor artist. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the New York Watercolor Club, and the Audubon Artists. Palmer's paintings have been exhibited by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the American Watercolor Society, and the Audubon Artists. His artist circle of friends included Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, and George Bellows.
Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.
